Hal Rammel on the Origins of The Retrospect Trio

While Russell Thorne is likely best known for his work as a bass player in Chicago in the late 50s and early 60s (including playing on the legendary RCA lp The Joe Daly Trio at Newport '63), when I first met him in 1982 he was playing cello and managing the Occult Bookstore near Clark and Belmont in Chicago.
Russell had built a theater space in the back half of the store (the Emergency Theater) and was organizing a weekly multimedia performance series. In 1982 I arranged a performance in the theater for Davey Williams and LaDonna Smith and first met Russell, Gina Litherland, Jennifer Pendur and others who collaborated on the Emergency Theater performances.
Russell was intrigued by the instruments I had designed and built and I began to play regularly with him in the theater. Russel's support and his very original use of electronic processing with the cello made these sessions crucial musical experiences for me as an improvisor and instrument inventor.
Around this time I also began playing with bass clarinetist/composer Gene Coleman. And it was in Gene's Ensemble Noamnesia that I met multi instrumentalist Bob Marsh. We were often paired together in Gene's complex pieces, improvising in the midst of complex notated passages.
At some point, Bob thought of adding Russell's cello into a trio of strings and musical saw and we began to rehearse, mostly in Bob's home studio. We played publicly only a few times, including as part of an experimental music festival (Face the Music) at the Hot House on Milwaukee Avenue in 1993, around the time these rehearsal tapes were made.
I had moved from Chicago to Wisconsin the year before and regular rehearsals were no longer possible. Russell had relocated from the Occult Bookstore in Chicago to Prisca Magia in Madison and our trio departed on separate musical adventures.

Recorded in 1993 to cassette in Bob Marsh’s studio.
Recordings mastered by Alex Inglizian at the Experimental Sound
